CASE STUDY - Shrivenham - UK
Royal Military College Laboratory still limescale free - no acid attack!
cs3

Supplies of distilled water are a regular requirement in chemistry laboratories. Many produce it using domestic water straight from the tap.
The chemist lab of the Royal Military College, Shrivenham is no exception and uses 10 litre capacity stills which are electrically heated. However, jShrivenham has a hard water supply. Whenever hard water is heated, there is a risk of limescale deposits building up very rapidly.
This was the case for the Shrivenham scientists who regularly dismantled their stills and used acid to clean heavy scale encrustation from the glass vessels and electric heating elements. Repeated acid cleaning has also pitted the outer metal surface of each element, effectively reducing its life. It was important to use non-chemical products to treat the hard water, but none Shrivenham had tested work efficiently before. A Hydroflow HS44 unit was recommended.
Being chemists with access to sophisticated equipment, the Shrivenham team decided to carry out some comparative performance tests using the same still.
Starting from the still in a completely clean condition, observations would be made using a Hydroflow unit over a 6 week period. The still would then be cleaned , re-used for a second 6 week period without Hydroflow and fresh measurements taken. Scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction test equipment was available. This confirmed that calcium carbonate crystals form immediately following the super-saturation point of heated water.
In the case of Hydroflow, crystals were initiated more quickly and grew larger, with the salts crystallising onto these, ‘Hydroflow crystals’ rather than onto the glass or electric element. Further, the water was maintained at saturation point.
Hydroflow completely removed the need for acid cleaning, with the consequent health and safety precautions. The need to dismantle the still was also obviated.
The Royal Military College chemists are very grateful to have these repetitive chores removed from their work schedule.
Having passed the tests of demanding military scientists with flying colours, Hydroflow HS44 units have been permanently fitted to all laboratory stills.

CASE STUDY - Solar Panels - UK
Solar Panels Ringwood, Cornwall

In the UK, many argue that the payback figures for solar thermal do not stack up, Eric Hawkins of Jayhawk International, specialists in renewable energy technologies comments, “Many people assume incorrectly that because we have so many overcast days that there will not be enough sunlight. And although ongoing running costs are exceptionally low, it’s still important for people in a hard water area to remember that whenever water is heated, there is a risk of limescale build up.

So just as British Gas recommend the installation of Hydroflow units on gas heaters, we strongly recommend the same water conditioner for our solar thermal installations.”‘The Candlesticks’ in Ringwood, Cornwall, is a 15th century thatched cottage restaurant that also comprises an 8 bedroom ensuite cottage style lodge to the rear. Energy bills were continually high, as gas was used for both heating the property and to supply hot water in the guest house and the restaurant kitchen. As a result, owner Roy Conway, contacted JayHawk International, about a solar thermal system to generate hot water.

The installation was particularly suited to solar thermal because of the hot water demands during the day are light.Following an inspection of the existing heating systems at the property, JayHawk concluded that the customer would benefit from solar thermal, and recommended that the current copper cylinders be replaced by two sets of Suntech 18 Super Heat Pipe Evacuated Tube Collectors. The specified 210 litre cylinders would provide maximum solar heat gain and are service free as they do not require a glycol/water mix to prevent the collectors from freezing in winter months.

The new system which is capable of delivering over 300 litres of water at 48ºC using thermostatic mixer valves took 5 days to install and has been supplying hot water ever since. The owner reports that even on overcast and rainy days, the gas boiler has not needed to be used outside of its two brief periods: Between 5 and 6am for early risers and between 6pm and 7pm when demand is at its peak. Early indications are that savings of 95% will be made in summer and 23% over winter – equating to 65% over the year.

CASE STUDY - Mashad Packaging - IRAN

Mashhad Packaging Industries Company is the first and greatest producer of metal cans of conserve, tomato paste, compote etc in Iran.

These metal cans are produced in a broad variety of shape and sizes, in complete hygienic condition. They are made according to the orders of various industries and are transferred to food factories all over Iran. They are used for every imaginable kind of food and beverage.

Background
The factory's machinery is produced under the brand of Soudronic which is made in Switzerland. Different equipment of the factory goes through the process of sheet cutting, forming, shaping, and finally resistant welding of the cans. The most susceptible and delicate stages of the process are drum welding or can body welding and welding the bottom of the cans.
This is done by hydraulic system and booster pump which can raise the pressure up to 8 Bar.

Results In September 2008 two Hydroflow HS44 units were installed on the pump's high pressure outlet hoses. The units’ function was impressive.
The introduction of HydroPath technology led to some results which were observable within two weeks after installation.

The following results have been observed so far:
• No scaling on water pressure control turbines.
• No scaling on hoses and water transferring pipes
• Removing the scale existing in tubes and turbines
• Avoiding changing the turbines and tubes
• Non-stop production till now

By March, 2009 the system has never been stopped. No maintenance has been necessary and the maintaining team has been really pleased with the function of the unit.

The quality of the welding is guaranteed by the high susceptibility and punctual and precise function of the solenoid control valves.
Like any other industrial system, wherever there is water, we are encountering the problem of scaling. In this project a slight amount of scale can disturb the function of the control valves.

As a result, welding is done in less or more than the desired time. In the former case, i.e. when welding is done in less than the required time, two pieces won't be jointed to each other mechanically. In the latter case welding will lead to burning and destruction of the metal body or bottom.

Limescale protection system alleviates explosive situation in Australia

Mining is an important industry in Western Australia, contributing to over a third of its Gross State Product and the main resources extracted are nickel, iron ore, and gold. However due to the extreme climate, mining poses many problems; temperatures can reach in excess of 50 degrees and the area has hard water supply which contains high levels of calcium and magnesium.

aus2

In some locations the water is treated primarily using the process of reverse osmosis which separates the solute from the solvent - however this is not always successful for eliminating limescale.Scale is so severe in the mining area of Mt Newman that the 150ltr hot water systems on some mine sites regularly ‘explode’ with the force caused from pressure relief valves being heavily blocked with lime scale. The result is a build up of pressure 100 times its capacity and inevitably the permanent damage of the hot water system.
Magnets and wire wind principles, supplied by other companies have been trialled to elevate this ongoing problem, but with very limited success.

Management at a mining camp located north of Mt Newman decided to trial Hydropath patented water conditioning technology to reduce the impact of limescale. However, it was not feasible to fit the unit on the main water pipe into the camp, as the plastic pipes are prone to leaking and this would affect the effectiveness of the unit. Therefore it was fitted to the areas which felt the greatest effects of excessive calcium carbonate including catering areas, laundry rooms and cold water chillers.

However, due to the extreme climate in the region, the units needed to be modified to protect them from damage from the elements. This included enclosing them in an IP56 rated weatherproof enclosure covered with an insulated galvanised shield to reduce exposure to direct UV rays and high surface temperatures of up to 70 degrees, which could compromise the effectiveness of the unit.

The Hydroflow HS44 and C45 systems were installed at the site to remove existing scale and prevent new scale from forming.

Personnel at the mine experienced numerous advantages following the installation of the Hydropath units. Drinking water has been reported to be more pleasant, elements such as those in washing machines, dishwashers, steamers and kettles are not covered with scale, and essentially hot water systems do not become blocked with limescale causing irreparable damage.

Pete Ramsay, Hydropath’s Australian distributor comments,
"It has been a challenge educating many decision makers on the effectiveness of Hydropath’s products; with so many alternatives making bold claims on eradicating limescale which have little impact. Hydropath’s HS44 unit is unique as it treats the whole system effectively preventing limescale from adhering to the pipes and removing existing scale without chemicals."

M.W. Combi-Boiler after 12 years - click photo for larger image. Excerpts from a letter to Maimtec, Vriezenveen, Holland

combi

I would like to share my experiences with the Hydroflow HS Anti Scale units
from Maimtec.
I have a proper technical background in my studies and job (manager of an installation company) and as such I have been in contact with a number of companies that offer solutions for scale problems in water installations .
In August 2002 I bought an appliance from Maimtec and installed it in my house, as the technology looked logical to me..
In my house at that time was a washing machine plus a 10 year old Combi-boiler and 'Close in' boiler in the kitchen – all with scale sensitive units with heating elements inside.
It is not normally easy to declare that the Hydroflow unit works because you would have to cut through apparatus to see the results.

However in the beginning of 2004 I decided to buy a new Combi-boiler and to place it on the living floor in place of the second floor.
The “Close-in” boiler in the kitchen was no longer needed.
As a maintenance man I was curious to see the how well the 12 year old equipment had faired so I cut these units apart to a look at the warming elements inside. I was astonished to see what I saw.
The boilers bodies of both boilers were with no scale at all and the warming elements
of both boilers were unbelievably clean. As an experienced maintenance man I have never seen such results.
I am recommending everyone to install such a unit in his house, the installation is very simple and the results are amazing.

TESTIMONIAL - New Zealand

I had an ongoing problem with lime build up in pipes causing pipes to block, ugly lime stains on wet area surfaces and I was using far too much washing powder than necessary to get clothes clean not to mention the copious amounts of dish wash detergent needed to get any soap bubbles at all.
I happened to mention this to Joe Somers from Hydropath NZ and he put me on to a Hydropath unit. I was unsure I would be able to install it my self but it was a breeze to install.

It was not long before I noticed the lime stains diminishing and later in the course of having some work my hot water cylinder needed to be emptied and when I saw the amount of lime that had literarily fallen off the element I was amazed and now the hot water heats up more quickly.
I can recommend the Hydropath unit it makes life that much easier and the best thing is no additives in the water.

MEEKATHARRAWA 6642

Dear Peter (Limescale Australia)
Living in Meekatharra WA has it’s setbacks and one of them is the quality of the scheme water. Very quickly hard calcium deposits build up on anything that the scheme water comes in contact with. Sinks and tubs get coated even when you keep them clean as possible. Kettles develop a build-up and eventually die. Air-conditioner batts especially get a massive build-up in just one summer. You could almost build walls with them. When I saw the Hydroflow HS advertised in our local paper I thought I would contact you and see what it was all about.

After using the Hydroflow HS for 12 months, I am totally convinced that it works to perfection. I have tested it in every possible way, by leaving water residue lying in the sink, laundry tub and leaving a dripping tap to continue onto a brick floor for 3 weeks while I was away from home. The only thing remaining in the sink and tub was a thin smear which promptly wiped off with a dry cloth and left no mineral residue whatsoever. The rose in my shower, which I scoured and took off all but a small piece of the existing scale, is still spotless except for the small piece which has not increased at all. This tells me that the Hydroflow HS is really doing its job.

The dripping tap was always a talking point as it developed a stalagmite on the brick. As we know these are caused by mineralisation in the water. No longer do I have a talking point (No stalagmite) so I have put a new washer in the tap. The best thing though is the fibre batts in my evaporative air conditioner. Prior to last summer I had a look at the batts and they had a considerable amount of scale in them.(I had put them in new for the previous summer.) Checking them before 1st use this season I find them to be completely free of any scale. This indicates that the Hydroflow HS is a winner in my eyes. To save over $100 each summer soon pays for the device.
I am very happy to endorse this product as a winner and to promote the use of the Hydroflow HS.

Best wishes

Dennis J. Shaw

hs44

The Hydroflow HS44 is the most well known and established of Hydropaths product range.
The HS44 is the domestic model designed for the average sized house of up to three/four bathrooms.
The HS44 is also used for the small installation like the catering tea urn, or laboratory stills, which are localised areas that particularly suffer from limescale.
The HS44 fits pipe work of up to 38mm outside diameter, is fitted to the cold feed of the heating source, and like all our product range, the red light shows that the unit is working 24 hours a day.
The HS44 is fitted as an OEM for boiler manufacturers and companies throughout the world.

How limescale builds up
Limescale builds up where there is a temperature change, a pressure change, and where there is water turbulence

Some places we find limescale at home
• Washing machines
• Dishwashers
• Gas water heaters
• Electric water heaters
• Solar panels
• Pipes, all kinds of pipe material (especially metal)

What does it do?
Protects the water system from energy sapping limescale even when there’s no water flow.
How does it work? Randomly varying electric fields are induced into the water. These fields propagate through the water in the entire plumbing system. The result is the production of nuclei everywhere in the water system.
When the water is heated the resulting precipitate that usually deposits on hot surfaces, grows in suspension and develops as a crystal on the nuclei and is then washed away in the flow.
The fields treat the water both up and down stream and will be transmitted into the central heating system to treat the primary water. The treated water is normally able to dissolve existing scale in just a few months.

What are the benefits?
With the rise of household energy prices, installing the Hydroflow is not only a ecological decision but an economic one too. Approximately 1mm of limescale can decrease the efficiency of your boiler by 10%. Limescale causes wasted electricity and gas as heating elements
become increasingly ineffective. Installing Hydroflow protects valuable
household equipment and appliances, and increases longevity of life.
Hydroflow soon pays for itself in the energy savings, and costs very
little a year to run.

Does it need any plumbing?
No - it simply clips to existing pipework, without any dismantling
whatsoever. The HS44 fits pipe work of up to 38mm outside diameter.

Where does it go?
Preferably installed on the cold feed to the domestic hot water cylinder
in a traditional system (usually in the airing cupboard).
See a diagram of where it goes - click your system type below:
